STAFF After being arrested and charged with two felony counts of child abuse, Hugo Special Education teacher Yolanda Dunbar had her teaching certificate suspended by the Oklahoma State Board of Education meeting in Oklahoma City last week. Hugo and its independent school district are still reeling from being notified by Oklahoma City Attorney Cameron Spradling on Feb.

Social Security announces expedited retroactive payments, higher monthly benefits for millions

• Actions support the Social Security Fairness Act The Social Security Administration announced it is immediately beginning to pay retroactive benefits and will increase monthly benefit payments to people whose benefits have been affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions reduced or eliminated the Social Security benefits for over 3.2 million people who receive a pension based on work that was not covered by Social Security (a “non-covered pension”) because they did not pay Social Security taxes.

Market development summer internships now available

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry is looking for qualified collegiate students to join the Market Development team throughout the summer. The Oklahoma Ag in the Classroom intern will promote the program through written and digital communications, assisting with events, organizing resources for educators and completing goals set forth by the program.

Humphrey calls bull on big brother beef

Rep. Justin Humphrey, R-Lane, recently spoke about his legislation that would have stopped the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry from requiring livestock to be tagged with radio frequency identification (RFID) devices failing to receive a hearing in a House committee.

Iris Garden Club plans open meeting

The Iris Garden Club met on Feb. 24 at Burnside Community room. President Harolynn Wofford called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Wofford and Shondell Rothmire were hostesses. The group recited the Gardener’s Creed and Rick Lowrance led in prayer.
