Former Undersheriff draws prison time for beating man in handcuffs

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced that Kendall Bryan Morgan, age 45, of Shady Point, Okla., was sentenced today to 22 months imprisonment and 36 months of supervised release for violating the civil rights of a handcuffed detainee without legal justification.

Single truck crash claims two local lives July 11

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has issued its preliminary report concerning a July 11 crash south of Hugo that claimed the lives to two local men. According to OHP Trooper Hunter Motley’s report, a 2012 Ford F250 pickup, driven by Amaney Jackson, 27, of Hugo, was northbound on County Road N 4220 (Old Paris Highway 271) at approximately 6:35 Tuesday, July 11, when he lost control of his vehicle, departed the roadway to the left, rolled 1/4 time, struck a tree and came to rest.

OMRF to study heart valve disease

The National Institutes of Health has awarded the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation $2.1 million to investigate a potential genetic cause of degenerative heart valve disease. “Like everything else in the body, heart valves degenerate as we age,” said OMRF cardiovascular biologist Sathish Srinivasan, Ph.D., who received the four-year grant.

Donors needed in July to prevent a blood shortage

The American Red Cross continues to see a concerning trend – blood donations are being sent to hospitals faster than they are coming in. The Red Cross has collected about 50,000 fewer blood donations than needed over the last two months. Donors are asked to make an appointment to give blood now to avoid a looming blood shortage.

Long-term care Ombudsman program looking for volunteers

The Ombudsman program advocates for residents of nursing homes, board and care homes, and assisted living facilities. Ombudsman programs work to resolve problems individual residents face and effect change at the local, state and national levels to improve quality of life and care. Ombudsmen provide information about how to find a facility and what to do to get quality care. Whether through individual contact with residents or systemic advocacy, ombudsmen make a difference in the lives of residents in long-term care facilities every day.
