Her tireless efforts were felt in every corner of our community, as she generously devoted her time and energy to numerous organizations close to her heart. She went to her Heavenly home on Oct. 2, 2023, at the age of 93. Going home ahead were her parents, John and Nola; her husband, Paul Lane in 2017; siblings: Miriam Burke Fulfer, Charles Knight, Edmond, Jr. Knight and wife, Cleda, LeRoy Burke, Sherman Fulfer; dear nephew, JE “Jim” Burke.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2023 at the First Assembly of God Church in Hugo, Okla., with Pastor Keithen Brown officiating. A private family burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery Hugo.

Elizabeth Jane Lane was born on Nov. 17, 1929, to John Edmond and Nola B (Wigley) Knight in Matoy, Okla. She graduated high school from Boswell in 1948. She moved to Hugo promptly for work with Southwestern Bell Telephone and married Paul B. Lane on Feb. 20, 1951, building a marriage of 69 years based on trust, faithfulness and FUN together. They put an immediate claim on their favorite niece, Jinx Yoder, who fondly knew Elizabeth as “Aunt Biddy.” Jinx was beside her side and devoted caregiver. Family and shopping were always key delights!

Elizabeth was a woman who truly knew how to ring in the good times. She had a passion for life and people that was as contagious as a cheerful dial tone. But it was her time at the Hugo SW Bell Telephone Company that truly brought out the best in her. Working alongside a group of friends who were closer than a conference call, Elizabeth spent her days ensuring that the lines of communication were always crystal clear. She had a knack for turning every office meeting into a lively chat, and her coworkers cherished her ability to turn work into play.

Elizabeth was a devoted member of the Hugo Assembly of God Church, where her unwavering faith and warm spirit enriched the lives of fellow congregants. Her tireless commitment to the church community was an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her, and she found solace and strength in her faith, even during life’s most challenging moments.

As a stalwart member of the Hugo Chamber of Commerce, Elizabeth played a pivotal role in fostering growth and prosperity within our town. Her visionary ideas and boundless enthusiasm were instrumental in numerous initiatives that breathed new life into our local economy. She was a shining example of how one person’s dedication can transform a community. Biddy’s love for nature and gardening was epitomized through her active involvement in the Iris Garden Club. She nurtured not only beautiful flowers but also lasting friendships among club members. Her garden was a living testament to her green thumb and her passion for the beauty that nature could bring to our lives. Furthermore, Elizabeth’s service on the Library Board was a testament to her commitment to education and culture. She believed that knowledge was the key to personal growth and community development. Her efforts ensured that our library remained a vibrant hub of learning and inspiration for all. The legendary, homemade fried pies that were lovingly created to raise funds for the new library are still the standard for the next generation.

Aunt Biddy’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of our town, and her impact will be felt for generations to come. She taught us the importance of community, faith, and the power of selfless dedication. Her warm smile, advice, and generous spirit will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. The key folks who are here carrying her memory are niece, Eugeania Jinx Yoder and husband, Lyle of Pattonville, Texas, along with a host of other family and friends.

In honor of Elizabeth’s memory, we encourage you to carry forward her legacy by becoming actively involved in the organizations that meant so much to her. Let us continue to work together to strengthen our community, just as she did throughout her remarkable life. Memorial donations are welcome for the First Assembly of God Church, 1176 US 271 South, Hugo, OK.

Aunt Biddy, you were a pillar of our community, a beacon of light, and a cherished friend to all. May you rest in eternal peace, knowing that your contributions to Hugo will forever be etched in our hearts and the history of our town.
