NORMAN –– Researchers from the University of Oklahoma, in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, are identifying areas that experience the most extreme heat in Oklahoma City as part of NOAA’s 2023 Urban Heat Island mapping campaign.
Melvin Turner grew this whopping 100-pound watermelon in the garden he and his father, Charles Turner, cultivate in Speer. Turner said this is the largest one he’s ever had.

Choctaw Nation to host Chahta Women in Leadership conference

DURANT –– The Second Annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Chahta’s Women in Leadership Conference will take place Wednesday, Sept. 13. The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma will host this year’s event set for noon to 3 p.m. at the Bell Tower, 218 N. 3rd Ave., Durant.

Choctaw Nation employees to receive hands-on culinary training, course credit

• Choctaw Nation Partners with Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology for Culinary Program DURANT –– In a one-of-a-kind partnership, Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma (CNO) Division of Commerce is teaming up with Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology (OSUIT) to offer Choctaw Casinos & Resorts food and beverage associates culinary training and college course credit. Choctaw Nation and OSU Institute of Technology have created an educational course designed specifically for casino and resort associates that’s aimed at preparing them for culinary careers.
