Donald G. Furr
Donald G. Furr, a faithful servant of the Lord and a cherished pillar of the Hugo community, was called home to glory on Sept. 12, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on April 1, 1941, in the humble town of Messer, Okla., Donald grew into a man of strength and integrity. His final moments were peaceful as he passed away surrounded by the love of his family in Hugo, Okla.
Donald’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love and faith. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Callie Furr, with whom he shared a beautiful journey of 60 years, having united their lives in holy matrimony on June 6, 1964, in Richmond, Ind. Together, they built a legacy of love that will forever be cherished by their family. Donald was a loving father to his daughters: Tina Sherman and husband of Tulsa, Okla., and Melissa McKay and husband of Moore, Okla. His brother, Haskell Furr and wife, also of Hugo, will fondly remember Donald’s brotherly companionship.
Donald’s joy was multiplied through his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. His role as a grandfather was filled with moments of laughter, guidance and an abundance of unconditional love. Donald’s legacy will continue to thrive in his family’s hearts, as they recall the lessons he imparted and the memories they cherished together. He now joins his parents, Ezra C. and Edna (Houchens) Furr, and his brother, Earl Furr, in the heavenly realm.
A patriot at heart, Donald proudly served his country for four years in the U.S. Air Force, after which he embarked on a fulfilling career with Weyerhaeuser Paper Company, dedicating more than 30 years of service before his well-earned retirement. His work ethic and commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to work alongside him. Donald led a life marked by selflessness, always ready to lend a helping hand, and his faith-filled spirit was an inspiration to all. He was an active member of his church, where he found great joy in fellowship and serving the Lord. Donald’s interests were as rich and varied as the life he led. He was an avid outdoorsman, finding solace and excitement in deer hunting, turkey hunting, and four-wheel riding. His love for camping and gardening allowed him to appreciate the simpler things in life, always marveling at God’s creation.
Perhaps one of the most defining qualities of Donald was his ability to bring warmth and light into any room, much like the words of Matthew 5:16, which he lived by: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” This scripture, attributed to Jesus, encapsulates the essence of Donald’s life –– a life lived in service to others and to the glory of God.
As we gather to celebrate the homegoing of this remarkable man, let us hold fast to the memories and the values that Donald G. Furr embodied. His life was a beacon of hope and a testament to the enduring power of faith. We are comforted by the knowledge that he is now at rest in the arms of our Savior, and his legacy will continue to shine brightly through each person he touched.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2024 in the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Chapel, with the Rev. Mark Sanders and Pastor Kyle Cummings officiating, and burial following in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Military Honors.
Services were under the direction of Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home.
