Shirley Downey
Shirley Downey, a beacon of love and wisdom, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Oct. 18, 2024, at the age of 89 in Hugo, Okla. Born on July 23, 1935 in Goodman, Mo., Shirley’s life was a testament to the enduring strength of family, faith and the simple joys of everyday life.
Shirley graduated from Bristow High School in the Class of 1953. Her academic journey was marked by a sense of community as she was an active member of the First Christian Church in Hugo. Shirley’s life took a beautiful turn when she married the love of her life, Charles Downey, on Oct. 24, 1953 in Bristow, Okla. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter and the pitter-patter of little feet.
Professionally, Shirley was known for her meticulous nature and analytical mind, which served her well in her role as a bookkeeper. She spent many years managing finances for various tax preparation companies, Mills Funeral Home in McAlester, and Prater-Lampton Funeral Home in Hugo. Despite her professional commitments, Shirley’s heart was always centered on her home and family. She dedicated herself to raising her daughters: Debbie, Joyce and Kathy and later, her greatgranddaughter. Shirley was the epitome of a nurturing soul, always ensuring that her family was cared for with unwavering devotion.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024 in the First Christian Church in Hugo.
Services were under the direction of Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Home.
