Walter Lee Gooding
Walter Lee Gooding, known fondly to family and close friends as “Spooky,” passed away peacefully at his home in Temple, Texas, on June 26, 2024, at the age of 84. He was born on Oct. 31, 1939 in Grant, Okla., to Jesse B. Gooding and Harrie Marie (Wilkins) Gooding. He was raised in an Agricultural environment.
After graduating from Hugo High School, Walter briefly attended the University of Oklahoma before enlisting in the United States Marines Corps. He was very proud of his service as a Marine and spoke of it often.
During his military service, Walter met the love of his life, Judy. Together, they raised three children: Timothy, Stephanie and Andrew. They shard a lifetime of memories and loved each other dearly.
Walter started his career in sales, but dedicated more than 30 years of his career to Commercial Real Estate. During his career, he was involved in the San Antonio Board of Realtors, eventually serving as Chairman of the Commercial and Industrial Committee. He was a member of the Greater San Antonio Builders Association and served on the Government Affairs Committee, as well as the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his career accomplishments, Walter was a devoted follower of Christ. He actively participated on various church committees, served on the Board of Trustees at Howard Payne University and taught Sunday School for more than 40 years in both the Baptist and Methodist Churches in San Antonio, Texas, and Hugo, Okla. Outside of work and church, Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, and time with family and friends. He was known for his kindness, friendliness, generosity, and Christian values. Walter is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Judy Gooding; his children: Timothy Gooding of Hugo, Stephanie Shaffer of Lakeway, Texas, and Andrew Gooding of Temple, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Reynolds Shaffer, Ethan Shaffer, Jameson Shaffer and wife, Madison, Garrett Shaffer, Kelsey Shaffer, and two greatgrandchildren: Harper and Parker, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Harrie; and siblings: William Dean Gooding, Vera (Gooding) Hutchison, Jesse Fred Gooding, Hal LeFlore Gooding, and Walter J. Leonard.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
