John Knox Bounds
Good evening. Tonight, we remember the accomplished and cherished life of John Knox Bounds, a man known for his intelligence, kindness, fascinating character, and analytical mind. Born on Jan. 17,1949 in Hugo, Okla., John’s journey through life was one marked by dedication, love and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. It is with a heavy heart that we announce his passing on Sept. 1, 2024, in Hugo, Okla., due to a tragic accident.
John’s life was a tapestry of academic and professional achievements. In the summer of 1967, he began his higher education journey at Oklahoma State University (OSU), where he joined the Sigma Nu fraternity in 1969, forming bonds and friendships that would last a lifetime. His commitment to his studies bore fruit on July 30, 1971, when he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in English. Not one to rest on his laurels, John furthered his education at Tulsa University, where he was awarded his Juris Doctorate degree on Dec. 22, 1974.
Armed with his education and a passion for justice, John embarked on a career in law. He served with distinction at the Tulsa District Attorney’s Office, Choctaw County District Attorney’s Office, and McCurtain County District Attorney’s Office, as an Assistant District Attorney, a role in which he excelled, and which allowed him to make a significant impact on his community.
John’s life was not solely defined by his professional achievements but also by the love and joy he found in his family. He is survived by his adoring wife, Paula Sue Bounds, and his children: Heather Bounds-Knox, Jordan Bounds, Kirsten Bounds and Caitlin Bounds. His family circle also included his stepdaughters: Kendra Mandrell and Kacy Baker, and the vibrant laughter of his 16 grandchildren. His sisters: Patti Whitt and Julie Pate, also survive him, carrying with them cherished memories of their brother. John was preceded in death by his parents, James Wayne Bounds and Sarah Elizabeth (Hughey) Bounds, who instilled in him the values of integrity and perseverance, and his stepson, Kenny Mandrell, whom he loved, dearly.
John Knox Bounds’ passing leaves an indelible mark on those who knew him. His memory will be cherished and celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with this extraordinary man. John’s life story is a reminder that one person’s courage and kindness can indeed make a world of difference.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held at a later date, where friends and loved ones can share the memories and laughter that John so abundantly provided.
