Betty Jo Lyles
Betty Jo Lyles, a cherished pillar of the Hugo community, passed away peacefully on Nov. 12, 2025, at the age of 94. Born on April 4, 1931 in Soper, Okla., Betty’s life was a testament to her kind, thoughtful and creative spirit.
Betty was the beloved matriarch of a close-knit family. She is survived by her devoted daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Ann and Terry Park of Hugo, and her son, Roy Eugene Lyles, Jr. of Hugo. Her legacy of love and kindness lives on through her grandchildren: Christina Ann and husband, Mike Tipton of Florissant, Colo., Angela Jo and husband, Michael Sparks of Hugo, and Libby Park of Hugo. Her great-grandchildren: Alyssa Ann Wright and Ethan Wayne Sparks, both of Hugo, will forever cherish the memories of their great-grandmother’s gentle guidance and unwavering support.
Betty’s life was marked by the bonds of family, including the fond memories of her siblings. She was preceded in death by her sisters: Lucille Montgomery, Wilma Hammond, Nadine Petty, infant twin sister of Bob, and her brothers: Tom Oakes, Edgar Oakes, Bob Oakes, and Jack Oakes. The stories and lessons from these relationships continued to influence Betty throughout her life and were often shared with her own children and grandchildren.
A woman of faith, Betty was a long-standing member of the First Christian Church of Hugo, where she found strength and community. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her actions and the way she lived her life each day.
Betty’s professional life was marked by her role as a bookkeeper, working alongside her husband, Roy, at their beloved Sooner Drug Store for 22 years. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as she owned and operated the Ceramic Shop, where she shared her artistic talents with the community. Her creations and the joy they brought to others will be remembered by many. In her spare time, Betty found pleasure in the simple joys of life, such as word search games and crosswords. These activities were more than hobbies; they were a reflection of her sharp mind and love for challenges.
Betty’s life was a beautiful mosaic of service, creativity and love. Her kindness and thoughtfulness touched the lives of everyone she met. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025 in the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Chapel with Pastor Shawn Robertson officiating, and burial following in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hugo.
