Choctaw County sees low turnout in June 16 primary election

CHOCTAW COUNTY –– Voter participation was limited in the June 16 primary election, according to unofficial results released by the Election Board. Of the county’s 9,204 registered voters (reported in May) –– including 5,137 Republicans, 2,580 Democrats, 1,433 Independents and 54 Libertar-ians— less than 2,000 cast ballots in the election.

‘Powwow People’ screening fills Choctaw Theater

The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma hosted a free screening of the film “Powwow People” on recently. Tickets were given out for all 96-seats at the District Cinema at the Choctaw Casino & Resort – Durant. Members of the Anoli Dance Troupe opened the event with a live powwow dance demonstration, and director Sky Hopinka spoke and answered audience questions at the conclusion of the one-hourand- 28-minute film.
